FIRE ON THE ARAWA.
FROZEN MEAT DAMAGED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The gas was cleared out of the Arawa to-day by means of a suction pump, and an examination of the hold showed that the bulkhead behind the insulation had become heated and had set fire to some of the woodwork in connection with the insulation. The hold contained 6000 carcases of mutton and a quantiqy of beef loaded at Auckland, and of this amount it was estimated a hundred quarters of beef have been spoilt. A quantity of mutton has suffered through becoming “smoked.” A start was made this morning discharging the meat, and it was expected all the car-,. go in the hold would be out by this evening. The reconditioning of the meat will then be proceeded with.
