JUDGES FORCED TO RETIRE.

NEW QUEENSLAND ACT. A Brisbane! correspondent reports that unique proceedings took place in the Supreme Court in that city a few days ago. the occasion being the official retirement, under the Judges Retirement Act which comes into operation now, of the Chief Justice (Sir Pope Cooper), Mr. Justice Real, and Mr. Justice Chubb. There was a very large attendance of members of the legal profession and general public. » Mr. Feez. K.C., read a. letter from the Commonwealth Attorney-General, regretting his inability to be present, and asking to bo associated in the expression of regret at the judge's retirement. Mr. Feez paid a glowing tribute to the retiring judges. They had given the best years of their life to the service of their country at great sacrifice to themselves. “Never in any British community,” he said, “had such an episode taken place.” Mr. Justice Shand and Mr. Justice Lukin, both of whom were visibly affected. thanked the retiring judges for the consideration they had always shown them. “Our friendship for one another,” said Mr. Justice Shand, “cannot be severed even by an Act of Parliament.” The retiring judges briefl ,v replied, each in tones broken with emotion.
