FIRES.
TWO SHOPS DESTROYED, -j? & By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., April 20. Just before 2 o’clock this morning a fire was discovered in a wooden building on the western side of the square, and two shops were destroyed, the occupants being J. H. Watt, cycle dealer, and Joe Kwong On, fruiterer. A small portion of the contents was -saved. Walt’s stock was valued at £ll5O and insured for £B5O. The Chinaman had no insurance. The premises of the Universal Supply Company adjoining were badly damaged by water, and goods valued at over £lOOO were rendered useless. The premises destroyed were the property of the Waldegrave Estate, and insured for £ll5O. FURNITURE FACTORY GUTTED. Christchurch, April 20. A furniture factory at Sydenham, a large three-storey wooden building belonging to J. Scott, was completely destroyed by fire early this morning. Work ceased at 5 p.m., and the origin of the tire is a mystery. The building is insured in the National office for. £BOO, the plant and other contents in the Australian Alliance office for £950.
