PERSONAL.
On the motion of the Prime Minister, the House of Representatives appointed Mr. John Strauchon, 1.5.0., late Under-Secretary for Lands, a member of the North Island Representation Commission, vice Mr. W. C. Kensington, resigned. Mr. James Rutherford and Mrs. Rutherford, of New Plymouth, the parents of Sir Ernest Rutherford, the distinguished scientist, were presented to Lord Jelli£oe yesterday. Lord Jellieoe was associated with Professor Rutherford on the inventions board during the war. An Auckland message says that the passengers by the Makura for New Zealand include Messrs. McCullough, Easton and Kettle, delegates to the Press Congress at Honolulu, and the through passenge|s included Messrs. Anderson, Peach, Hawkes and Todd, Australian tennis players. Learning that Mr. W. D. Webster, an old resident Qf New Plymouth, would be keerily disappointed that as the result of illness he would be unable to meet Lord Jellieoe, especially as he had always taken such a keen interest in the navy. His Excellency very thoughtfully stopped at Mr. Webster’s residence on the way to the hospital yesterday, and, accompanied by Lady Jellieoe. spent a few minutes in conversation with Mr. Webster.
