VISIT TO NEW PLYMOUTH. EARLY HISTORY RECALLED. TOUR OF THE HOSPITAL. In the course of their visit to New Plymouth Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Jellieoe had a busy time yesterday fulfilling numerous engagements of a varied character. These included visits to Marsland Hill, the Public Hospital and Pukekura Park, with the civic reception in the morning and the opening of the Clarke Memorial Hostel in the afternoon. In addition His Excellency participated in a game of golf on the Waiwakaiho links, and Lady Jellieoe visited the Plunket rooms in Brougham Street. In the evening Their Excellencies attended the Citizens’ Ball at the Coronation Hall. Throughout yesterday the weather w’as fine, but light rain was experienced early in the evening. The Vice-Regal party left the White Hart Hotel at 9.30 yesterday morning on the round of engagements. Their Excellencies were accompanied by the Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) and the borough general manager (Mr. F. T. Bellringer). The first visit was to Marsland Hill, where Her Excellency remained in her car chatting with some girl guides while Lord Jellieoe explored the hili. In the course of his visit Lord Jellieoe was an interested listener to the various particulars regarding this historical place. Mr. W. H. Skinner, who was presented to His Excellency, recounted many facts concerning old New Plymouth, and the part the hill played in the fortification of the settlement. “This is much more interesting than making speeches,” remarked the Governor-General as he was reminded that the time was approaching for the fulfilment of another engagement. Mr. W. F. Gordon, one of the original committee responsible for the erection of the monument, was presented to His Excellency during the visit. On arrival at the Public Hospital Their Excellencies were met by the chairman of the Taranaki Hospital Board (Mr. M. Fraser), Drs. Leatham, Walker and Home, Messrs. J. R. Sutherland, H. R. Cattley, E. R. Gilmour and E. Holden (secretary). Accompanied by the matron (Miss Campbell), the Vice-Regal party were conducted over the institution, and spent some time in the wards chatting with the inmates. Two Messines veterans were the subject of particular enquiry by the Governor-General, while Their Excellencies had a cheery word for all the patients. In the course of their visit they expressed pleasure on the appearance of the hospital, and the work which was being done. A trip through Pukekun. Park ’was made by the party after the public reception. Enhance was made from the racecourse gates, where Their Excellencies were met by Mr. C. E. Bellringer (--hairman of the Park Board), Messrs. R. C. Hughes and P. E. Stainton (secretary). In the course of the walk through to the Gilbert Street gates Their Excellencies showed* a keen interest, and appreciation of the surroundings, and before rejoining their car congratulated the board on the park.
