KAPONGA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Oddfellows’. Hall, Kaponga, was well filled on Tuesday evening, 18th inst., when a social was given by the Methodist Bible Class. The Mangatoki, Riverlea and Awatuna undenominational classes were well represented. An interesting programme, consisting of musical items, recitations and games, was submitted, concluding with supper dispensed by the ladies. LABOR DAY. In common with the rest of the North Island, Kaponga produced a day fit to be spent only at the fireside. Numerous parties, some heading for the beach, some for the tennis courts and the cricket ground, to say nothing of sundry anglers, all were compelled to make the best of things at home.

A particularly hard-up contingent splashed its way through to Waverley, and, such is human nature, the members thereof derived endless amusement and satisfaction from seeing others in worse plight than themselves. It certainly requires more than mud and a cold southerly to damp the ardor of the optimistic punter. COMING CHAUTAUQUA SEASON. The draft of the next season’s programme has just come to- hand, and it would appear that the items to be presented will more than maintain the high standard reached last year. The season here is arranged for February 6 and FOOTBALLERS’ BALL. Thia function, to be held on Thursday night, 27th inst.. promises to be a distinct success, in spite of the limited time available to work it up. This is mainly due to the enthusiasm displayed by the two committees (ladiee’ and men’s) who are leaving nothing in the matter of arrangements undone. Ticket sellers are finding, too, that many who are past the age when dancing is a pleasure, are buying tickets simply at the recollection of the pleasurable Saturday afternoons provided by the football boys. Good luck to the type!
