AUSTRALIA v. SOMERSETWIN FOR AUSTRALIA. Ey Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright London, August 25. Australia beat Somerset by an innings and 58 runs. The weather was fine but dull at the start. A sprinkle of rain early in the morning hardly affected the wicket, which was still good. Further rain fell during the luncheon adjournment, and caused the interval to bo extended to 90 minutes, but the pitch was not damaged to any extent. The attendance was 6000.

The Somerset batting was poor, only Considine and White making anything like a stand. With the exception of a few overs by Armstrong, the bowling fell to Macdonald and Malley, the former finishing up with the fine

average of seven wickets for 31. The first four batsmen were dismissed for 25. Considine kept his end up, but could get no one to stay with him, and eight wickets were down for 31 when White joined him. Tho half century took 70 minutes, and the century 110 minutes.

After the luncheon adjournment tho batsmen hit out. Good fielding kept down the scoring, but both men were missed at the wicket off Mailey. Macdonald eventually broke the partnership at 118, White falling to negotiate a full pitch. Considine’s innings was ft fine i defensive effort. Johnson opened by knocking 20 off Macdonald in’ six hits, before the bowlers found his wicket, then the batting became very slow and the bowlers began to take steady toll. The first run from Armstrong was in his seventh over. From then on ho reaped a rich harvest, ending with 7 for 55. The first four wickets produced 57. Lowry then opened out, treating all alike and hit in exhilarating style, scoring 50 in 33 minutes. His total included two sixes and seven fours. His innings was excellent all-round play, and he was dismissed by a fine catch in front of the parlion. Off Armstrong’s first ten overs only one run was scored, and then 39 were hit off the next three. The remaining wickets added only 39, tho match ending just on time.
