ENGINEERS’ EXAMINATIONS.
' NEW PLYMOUTH AS EXAMINING. CENTRE. The Taranaki Chamber of Commerce recently wrote to the Department ol Marine as follows: The attention of my Council has been drawn to a Press telegram which appeared in our local papers on Friday last, which, if true, would indicate that your department contemplated cutting out New Plymouth as an examining cen tre -for engineers. It is, I feel sure hardly necessary for me to oul&rge upor the growing importance of New Ply mouth, both industrially and commer cially, as well as of it being the chief port of the west coast. For these ons my Council wish to strongly protest against any such retrograde step and injustice to this province. If a decision has been arrived at in the terms of the Press telegram, we would very respectfully urge your reconsideration of the matter, as we believe it of im portance to Taranaki. Last evening Mr. 8. G. Smith, M.P.. who had also interested himself in the matter, received the following wire from the acting-Prime Minister: “A Gazette notice will shortly be published making New Plymouth and some other places examining centres.”
