Delhi, August 23.

Reports have been received of disturbances in the Moplah country, Calicut district. The State railways have been torn up, telegraphs cut, and railway stations and post offices looted and burned, while two officers and four constables were killed.

The trouble is the result of agitators working on the religious fanaticism of the more ignorant Moplahs, which was brought to a head by the decision of the Government to arrest the leading seditioniste. The Magistrate, accompanied by a party of police and military, proceeded to Tirurangadi on Saturday for that purpose and three thousand armed Moplahs approached the town. The Magistrate went out for the purpose of causing some casualties. Twenty ardispersing them and fire was opened, rests were made.

Meanwhile the party remaining in Tirurangadi was attacked and driven in by large armed bodies of Moplahs. Coming up from the other direction police and military drove off the assailants, but eventually withdrew from Tirurangadi. Troops are being despatched from Bangalore and the situation is reported to be still serious.

The officer commanding the Malabar area has issued a proclamation forbidding trespassing on the railway line and also forbidding public assemblies in view of the state of open rebellion prevailing in Ernad and North Ponani. —Reuter Service.
