Sergt. D. J. O’Neill, of Rahotu, left by the mail train yesterday morning to take up his appointment at Wellington. Mr. D. Reid, who has been manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Dargaville for the past seven years, has been appointed manager of the Feilding branch. Mr. John Brown, who died recently at Weedons, at the age of eighty-eight years, was one of the pioneer settlers of Canterbury. He landed at Lyttelton in 1858.

The death has occurred at Pakowhai of another of the pioneer settlers of Hawke’s Bay, in the person of Mr. John Gillighan. The deceased was seventytwo years of age. Mr. F. H. Brittain, of the Department of Agriculture, retires on superannuation at the end of this month after 27 years’ service. He will be succeeded as stock inspector at Auckland by Mr. A.' V. Huddleston, of Te Kuiti. Sir William Sinclair Marris, an old resident of Wanganui, and an ex-pupil of the Wanganui Collegiate School, has been appointed Governor of Assam, vice Sir Nicholas Dodd Beatson-Bell. Sir W. S. Manns .entered the Indian service in 1895, and has served as Joint Secretary to the Government of India and as Home Secretary, to which position he was appointed in 1919. Mr. T. W. Kirk, director of Horticulture, will retire from the service of the Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce, on superannuation, at the end of this month. Mr. Kirk has bees in the Government service for CXer 30 years, and has been the guiding hand in the destinies and progress of the horticultural branch. The personnel of the War Pensions Medical Appeal Ikiard, of which Dr. Christie is president, has been completed by the appointment of Dr. Lapraik, of Auckland, and Dr. Edie, at present on the staff of the King George Hospital, Rotorua. The itinerary of the board provides for a sitting at New Plymouth on June 25.

The death took place on Sunday morning of Mr. Fred Given, inspector for the Hawera Borough Council. Death was due to pneumonia. He was an old Otago representative footballer in the match against Taranaki in the days of A. Bayly, the Goods, Lambie, and other well-known players. Mr. Given leaves a widow and two children.
