WAI-TOI-TOI—URENUI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Friday evening last the usual fortnightly euchre party and dance was held In the Pukearuhe schoolroom, and despite the wintry weather there was a good attendance, visitors being present from Wai-toi-toi and Uruti. Keen interest is being evinced In the euchre competition on account of the points’ prize that is being given at the end of the season. Miss I. Moeller was first amongst the ladies, whilst Mr. Dombroski won the gentlemen's prize. After the cards, dancing was indulged in, Mr. J. Robinson making a most efficient M.C. The music was supplied by the ladles present, and a most acceptable supper was provided. On the same evening, Okoke held thdr euchre party and ,dance, this also being most successful. In the ladies’ class, Miss I. Jones was first and Miss Musker second, whilst Mr. W. Colson secured first honors amongst the gentlemen, Mr. J. Finnerty being second. Mr. A. Simmonds, as M.C., kept the dancers busy, whilst the music was contributed by a number of ladies and gentlemen. The ladies of the district provided a most welcome supper, which it is needless to say, was accorded full justice. The masquerade ball, which is to be held on the 17th inst promises to be most successful, quite a number of fancy dresses being prepared for the occasion. At a meeting of the Ati Awa troop of Frontiersmen held in the library on Saturday evening last, troop-leader J. Ross presided over an attendance of some sixteen members. Staff-lieutenant A. L. Hunter, accompanied by Staff-Sergeant Major Geo; Bertrand and Frontiersman Evans, were present from New Plymouth. Several matters in connection with the Legion were discussed, and Staff-lieuten-ant Hunter gave some valuable and interesting information on the subject. 1 Various arrangements were fnade with regard to the forthcoming encampment, which promises to be most successful, the New Plymouth Jockey Club, in tteir usual sporting manner, having placed their commodious buildings at the disposal of those attending. Before concluding the meeting, a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the visitors for their attendance and information given. Shewry’s defeat of Richardson in the 12th chop for £l2O at Taihape, was anticipated in this district, and keen interest was taken in the result. Several small amounts changed hands, but the wagering was not on such a large scale as on the Shewry-Green contest. Messrs. C. Rumball, L. Rattenburg, and E. George, of the Urenui Rifle Club, visited Patea on the occasion of the Rifle Shooting Match on the King’s Birthday. Both Messrs. George and Rumball secured prizes and Mr. Rattenburg just missed by one point. Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, they all report having had a good time and speak .highly of the manner in which the meeting was conducted. Mr. Geo. Pascoe, truant inspector of the Taranaki Education Board, paid a visit to the Mimi school on Monday last. Mr. C. Barnett, of Uruti, the popular secretary of the Uruti Beach Races Club, was married at Patea last week. It is expected there will be a large gathering of friends to welcome him and Mrs. Barnett on their return to Uruti.
