AUSTRALIA v. GLOUCESTER. VISITORS’ HIGH SCORING. THREE WICKETS FOR 421. Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, June 8. The match between Australia and Gloucester opened at Bristol to-day. Australia batted all day, and when stumps were drawn had three wickets down for 421. The wicket was fast and the weather fine but dull. The attendance was 7000. The Gloucester tfeam is: F. Robinson, D. Robinson, Rowlands, Williams, Dennett, Parker, Dipper, Smith, Mills, Hammond and Bargett. From the Australian team Collins, Carter and Taylor were omitted. Armstrong won the toss and opened with Mayne and Bardsley. Parker, who is a left-hand bowler above medium pace, and Dipper, who is a right-hander of medium pace with a high delivery, started the attack. Th,e batsmen notched 25 in seventeen minutes, Mayne’s contribution being 18. Mill replaced Dipper at 35, Bardsley welcoming him by hitting 14 off one over. Mayne and Bardsley vied with each other in a neck and neck race. The former, hooking balls ou the middle peg round to leg in an audacious manner, scored 50 in an hour, the century immediately following. Bardsley reached 50 ten minutes later. Dennett and Hammond took turns at the attack, and the former, in his second over, clean bowled Mayne, who made 78, including 12 fours. This was his only confident innings of the tour. Macartney followed. The wicket suited the batsmen, and Bardsley and Macartney kept the pace a cracker, despite bowling changes and a new ball. Bardsley, when 78, was missed by Dennett in slips off Hammond. Two hundred was hoisted for 110 minutes’ play, and Bardsley got his century in under two hours. Bardsley and Macartney made the pace merry. Macartney hit up fifty in fifty-five minutes. When 56 he should have been stumped by Robinson, off Mills. Bardsley, at 132, played Dennett on to his wicket.-—2 wickets for 281 runs. This was a partnership of an hour’s brilliant and attractive batting, particularly leg work. Bardsley hit seventeen fours. Andrews followed, and the scoring continued free. Parker came on instead of Dennett when the score was 314. At five o’clock rain caused a quarter of an hour adjournment. On resuming Parker and Mills bowled. Macartney, after

a chance of being run out, reached his century in 105 minutes. Taking risks, he was again missed at 119 by the coverpoint. At this stage s'o was added in twenty minutes, Macartney’s share being 42, chiefly boundaries. With one short of 150 Macartney was clean bowled by Dennett, and Andrews and Pellew were together when stumps were drawn. Details of the play are:— AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
