FIRE BRIGADES CONFERENCE
SPEED AND RISKS. Bo Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, March 1. At the Fire Brigades’ Conference today, the secretary, Mr. Watt, moved that, in view of the serious nature of the recent Hamilton accident, the Government be requested to take steps to prevent similar occurrences. He said that all -stations should have motor engines. The time had come when brigadesmen should not run such risks. He stated that in some places, instancing Auckland, firemen travelled too quickly, even returning from a fire at an excessive speed. He would like to see the Government, set a maximum speed for fire engines and give all brigades the right to the road on their way to an outbreak. Secretary Cross (Hamilton) thought the speed of fire engines should be limited and firemen restricted from taking undue risks. The motion was carried unanimously, and it was resolved to forward it to t'he United Fire Brigades’ Association for consideration.
