THE HALF-HOLIDAY Stratford, March 1. Af a largely attended meeting of retailers held tq-night, it was decided that in view of the alteration in the halfholiday ..the hours of closing for shops will be 9 o’clock on Friday nights and 12 noon on Saturdays. It was also resolved to ask the Railway Department to run the present Saturday timetable on the Whangamomona line on Fridays in order to enable j residents of Tahora and Kohuratahi to visit Stratford on that day. THE BROADWAY LEASES. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., has received advice from the General Manager of Rail•ways to the effect that full protection for improvements will be provided for in the new leases for the railway reserves in Broadway, to be submitted to public auction on March 19. The leases will be for a period of 21 years, with a right of renewal for a further 21 years.

Mr. L. Birks, chief Government electrical engineer, has notified the town clerk that he will arrive in Stratford on Tuesday, March 8, and will be prepared to discuss electrical matters with local representatives that evening. The secretary of the Taranaki Progress League has communicated with Mr. Birks, asking if it will be convenient for him to meet the committee of the League on Tuesday morning. The total rainfall in Stratford during the month of February, as recorded by the official observer (Mr. T. Harry Penn), was only 2.58 inches. There were altogether six days with rain, the heaviest fall being 1.49 inches on the 7th. The other falls were .07 on the 4th, .18 on the sth, .5 on the Bth, .08 on the 19th, and .26 on the 22nd.

Six building permits were issued by the Stratford Borough Council during February, for buildings of a total value of £5600. They include two residences, one costing £l9OO and the other £l2OO, thrfee additions to existing buildings of a total cost of £1940, and the new shelter shed, for the Stratford School, costing £6OO. The vital statistics for the Stratford, district during the month of February, as supplied by t'he registrar (Mr. S. H. James) are as follows, the figures for the corresponding month last year being given in parenthesis: Births. 16 (16); marriages, 4 (3); deaths, 2 (5). During the past month there was one case of twins in Stratford. Dr. Steven and Mr. E. Marshall, two members of the Stratford Business Science Circle, which is conducted under the direction of the Sheldon School of Business Science, have received word that they have gained the diploma for qualifying in the course of studies arranged by the school.

* The improvements which are being effected to the water supply at the Cardiff Dairy Factory will be completed this week, and will provide a very efficient service. A concrete weir has been erected in place of the old weir, which was continually giving trouble, and nine chains of concrete pipes have been laid from the weir to the rams which pump the water into the reservoir. Under the new system a spleifdid pressure will be

maintained, which will result in greater efficiency at the factory. Mrs. H. Bishop and Messrs. S. Spence, D.-'Jt. O’Connor. G. Wunsch and W. W. Blair, returned the correct weight (7filbs) in the Sheep weight-guessing competition held in connection with the Plunket Society’s sales day on Saturday, and as a result of drawing lots the prize was awarded-to Mr. Spence.
