Mr. W. R. Wright, of Rahotu, was a passenger for the north by the Rarawa last night. The Rev. Father Menard is leaving Wanganui. He has been appointed to Okato, and will j:ake up his duties there this week.

Mr. Caughley, M.A", Assistant Director of Education, has been appointed Director, in succession to Dr. Anderson, who is retiring on superannuation.—i Press Association.

Colonel Young, director of the Live Stock Division of the Agricultural Department, arrived in New Plymouth by the mail train last night. He will be present at the Egmont Show to-day. A telegram from Auckland says that Mr. J. H. Gunson, who has held a lengthy term as mayor, and who had decided to retire, has consented to stand’ again at the earnest request of leading citizens.

Mr. W. Downie Stewart was yesterday sworn in as a Minister of the Crown at a full meeting of the Executive. Mr. Stewart has been given the portfolio of Internal Affairs, and will probably also deal with the Customs Department.—Press Association. The offer of the Rev. A. A. Bensley, of Inglewood, for work in the foreign mission field, was accepted by the Conference of the Methodist Church in Wellington on Saturday. Mr. Bensley will take up work in the Solomon Islands.

It already appears practically certain that there will be a contest for the Eltham Mayoralty at the forthcoming municipal elections. Further, it seems likely that the contestants will be either Mr. I. J. Bridger and the present Mayor (Mr. G. W. Taylor), or Mr. Bridger’and Mr. H. G. Carman.—Argus. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, has received advice from London that the board has appointed Mr. D. M. Morgan (an inspector of .the company) to be the Chief Inspector for New Zealand. Mr Morgan has been in the service of the company for many years and is regarded as one of its most experienced and capable officers. The Rev, W. Cannell, of New Plymouth, having attained the diamond jubilee of his ministry in the Methodist Church, the conference, which is now in session in Wellington, has directed that a letter of cordial congratulation be forwarded to him. Similar congratulations were extended to the Revs. T. G. Carr, G. Bond, H. R. Dewsbury, and J. Thomas, who have completed a ministry of 50 years earn.
