MAILS ARRIVE TO-DAY.

FIRST DIRECT PROM AUSTRALIA. SUEZ MAIL TO-NIGHT. The first letter and parcel mail from Australia for New Zealand to be brought direct to New Plymouth, will bo landed here this morning from the C, and I), liner Port Alma. Previously a steamer from Australia brought a small local mail, and one has been landed at Waitara, but this will be the first occaßion on which a mail for all parts of the Dominion has been brought direct to New Plymouth. The Port Alma arrived off the Taranaki coast on Sunday morning, but owing to the congestion of shipping at New Plymouth she went to Waitara. Now die is to come to Now Plymouth, and will probably have to return to Waitara before going to Wellington. The vessel is e.vpected to berth at 8 o'clock this morning, and the mail to be landed will consist, of 08 bags of letters and papers, and a similar quantity of parcels. The Tofua, from San Francisco, arrived at Wellington at 11.30 a.m. yesterday with a parcel mail. The Taranaki portion will probably not arrive beforo to-morrow, parcels not being regarded as urgent mail matter. The Maheno reached Auckland yesterday with an EngSsh mail. The Taranaki portion comprises 60 bags, which is exceptionally large for Taranaki, and it will arrive by the mail train tonight.
