A cable from London records the death of Ellen Tuckfield, wife of Mr. William Murdoch, the pianist. The Rev. J. Napier Milne has intimated to the officials of Whiteley Church that he will not be able to remain in New Plymouth after April next. Mr. R. Buckley, who has been' on a holiday visit to Christchureh during the past fortnight, returned to Inglewood by the mail train last night. The death is announced at Katikati of Mr. John Wilson, aged 87. This removes the last but three of the firstsettlers who came to that district in September, 1875, deceased being a member of the first party which arrived in Auckland by the Carisbrooke Castle. Mr. Archibald F. Nicoll, Director of the Canterbury College School of Art, Christchureh, and Mrs. Nicoll; are in Hawera, where Mr. Nicoll will devote his short term vacation to making portrait studies of Lieutenants Grant and Laurent, V.C.'s. Mr. Nicoll has been commissioned by the Government to complete half-length life-size portraits of these officers for the collection which will eventually find a place in the Doininon War Museum. Captain Kirk, M.C., recently of Hawera, has taken over the command of No. 5 Coy., Territorial unit. For many years Captain Kirk was associated with the old Petoue Navals—almost from their inception—but some time before he enlisted for active service he was transferred to Hawera, and had, therefore, to sever his connection with the company. Captain Kirk received an enthusiastic welcome back to Petone on Tuesday evening. Miss Leila Hurle, : who last year won the League of the Empire Empire Day Essay Challenge Cup for the New Plymouth High School, has now received the trophy, which will be held'by the school for a year. The inscription shows.that it has been won as follows:—1000, Eton College; 1907, 1011 and 1014, Brisbane Grammar School; 1008, Model Public School (Sydney); 1900, Crossley and Porter School (Halifax, England); 1910, La Martiniero College (Calcutta); 1912, Baldwin High School (Bangalore, India); 1013, Cyril King, Waitaki Boys' School (Oamaru, New Zealand); 1915, Putney Secondary School (London); 1019, MisV. Leila Hurle, New Plymouth Girls' High School.
