ATHLETICS.

SPORTS AT URENUI. A -SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. An interesting athletic sports meeting waa held at Urenui yesterday. Fine weather prevailed, and there was a large attendance. The track was in splendid order, In all the events, ■ both athletic and chopping, there were large fields and keen contests. A feature which augurs well for the future of athletics in the district was the number of young 1 competitors, who showed great promise. The finishes in nearly every case were very close, reflecting credit on the local handieappers, Messrs- C. Rumball and W. H. Fuller. The judges, Messrs. R. H. Pigott, A. H. Halcombe, and A. D. Carr, gave their decisions promptly- Mr. L. Rattenbury, as starter, got his fields away well, while the marksmen, Messrs. C. Wilson and T. Wright, were thorough in their duties. Mr. J. Colman, the "Charlie Chaplin" bell man, provided much amusement.

'Particularly good arrangements were made by the secretary, Mr. G. ST. Fuller, who proved a splendid worker, and deserves congratulations on the success of the gathering. The catering, in the hands of a capable ladies committee under the direction of Mrs. F- W. Fuller, was right up to the high standard set hy the Urenui ladies and they had a busy time. Slight caught his field in the last lap and led into the straight, whore Whitehead put In a determined challenge and just failed to win by inches.

TOKO SPORTS. A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The annual sports gathering of the Toko Settlers" Picnic and Sports Association was held in the Toko Domain yesterday in ideal weather conditions. There was an attendance of about 800, and the function was a thorough success in every respect. The music was supplied by the Eitflam Band. Very satlsljactory entries were received for all tho events, and the whole of the .large programme was carried out without a hitch. The splendid success of the gathering was largely due to the energetic committee appointed, and to the excellent organisation of the secretly, Mr. J. Sullivan. Flfity per cent, ofj the net proceeds of the sports are to be donated to the Stratford Hospital X-Ray Fund, which should benefit comjlderatlfy. The catering arrangements were ably carried out by Mr. B. Vtnsen, of the Stratford Marble Bar. At the conclusion of the sports, the prizes werß presented to the winners by Mr. R. Masters, 31.P.

In the evening a dance was held In the Coronation Hall, and proved a most enjoyable function.
