DISTRICT NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) On Friday last the parents, scholars, and fi'iend3 of Newall School hold their annual picnic. Towards the conclusion of the day's entertainment opportunity was token by thoso aas&mbled to unveil a large photograph of the late Colonel Newall.
The presentation was made by Mr. Cassle, on bohalf of Mr. Newall, of Hongkong, China, and Mrs. Williams, Wain!, New Zealand, son and daughter of the late Colonel, who had the picture prepared and forwarded in time for the occasion. It was deemed most fitting and appropriate that the school should be In possession of the likeness of that worthy man, whose name both school and road bear. After Mr. Ruimbnil, rhalrman of the school committee, had removed the New Zealand ensign, he expressed his thanks to Mr. Newall and Mrs Williams for presenting the school with the fine picture, and paid a high tribute to the qualities ■ Colonel Newall as a soldier and to his abill' n commanding men. No doubt It was due to his judgment and forethought that a settlement of the Maori troubles was happily completed. Prior to his death, 'Colonel Newall was Honorary Military Superintendent of King George's Hospital, Rotorun, and the enlargement is a replica of the one presented to that establishment.
TOKO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Toko School Committee was held on Monday night. Present: Messrs. M. Gernhoefer (chairman), H. Milne, L. C. Milne, .1. T. Kllpatrlck, .7. Kllpatrlck, and.A. }. Chainey (hon. sec). Air. .1 H. Bocock (headmaster) was also present by Invitation from the. committee, and laid before them a number of proposed improvements to the school premises. It was resolved to procure a set.of reading books for the use of the. teachers; also a slasher, scythe and lawn mower. Four cords of rata firewood were authorised to be procured. The next meeting was fixed for Monday, March 29.
