THE EGMONT MEETING.

SUCCESSFUL GATHERING, Favored by ideal weather conditions there was an. attendance of over 4000 at the Hawera racecourse yesterday to witness the Hawera Motor Cycle Club'a 6ports.

Some of the contests produced thrilling finishes, and the whole programme passed off without any mishap- Motor cycb racing is no novelty to the people of Ciouth Taranaki, as on two previous occasions successful meetings have been run.

Coleman and Manghan, the champions, rode quite up to expectations, their exhibitions evoking applause. Each secured a win, though in the big race the latter's machine met with a mishap. The double win of ,W W. Davy, and the wins of IT. Sykes and H. Champion, local riders, were very popular.

A special word of pratee k due to thp secretary, Mr. W. V. Patterson, for his splendid arrangements. The. handicapping of Mr A. Barley produced good finishes. The afternoon tea kiosk, which was managed for the Club by /Jfrg. Hutchinson, had a busy time, the takings being £7O; whilst £3O was taken at the soft drinks stall.

The Egmont Racing Club lent valuable assistance by placing its course and appointments' at the Club's disposal for the day, and Mr. A. Moore, the Club's custodian, had spared no effort in preparing the track, which was in excellent condition. Thfe ambulance, >as well as the Club's honorary surgeons, were present, but their services were not required. During the afternoon a splendid programme of music was rendered by the Hawera Citizens' Band, NOVICE HANDICAP, five laps, any machines. First, goods valued £5 ss, donated by the Para Rubber Co.; second, value £3 3s, donated by Mr. A. F. Cola; third, value £1 la, donated by Mr. L. O. Grace. H. Moeller (7-9 Harley-Davldson), Bsec. .. The Hrnlt men got away smartly, and had nearly completed a lap before the back markers, of whom Moeller, was the quickest to move, had made a start. There was no alteration until the last lap, when Moeller, who had made up a lot of ground, put In a determined spurt, and entering the home turn, passed the leader and gained flrst place by about 30 yards from Champion, with a similar distance! furthor bacH Schwecters was close up fourth. Time, 5.40.

MANAIA HANDICAP, eight laps, for. 5-6 h.p. machines and over. First £l2, second £5; third, £3.

Moeller was again away smartly, Clarlngbold being slow to get going. The three limit men had completed more than a lap before the scratch men started. Busing gave up after the first lap. The order was then Moeller, Clarlngbold, Mangham, and Coleman. Mangham, riding well, passed Clarlngbold just before completing the sixth lap, and going on strongly, passed Moeller nt the back the last time round, winning comfortably by about 200 yards. Coleman had to be content with third place 100 yards further back, Clarlngbold being a similar distance away fourth. Time, 7.53 2-5.

TARANAKI HANDICAP, six laps, for machines up to 8% h.p. First £lO, second £3, third £2. W. W. D&vy (2% Douglas), 45sec 1 R. Jones (2% N.U.T.), 45sec 2 F. H. Champion (2% Douglas), 70sec. .. 3 Also started: J. Sweeney (3% Indian) scr., F. Sykes (3% Royal Ruby) 6see, E. C. Galsford (3% Indian) Bsec, F. Smith (3% Royal Ruby) 35sec, J. This proved tho most exciting event of the day, Davy and Jones fighting out a great finish. At the beginning of the fifth lap, Davy had caught Champion, and was joined towards the end of the lap by Jones. The pair entered the sixth ' lap together, and were together wheel and wheel the whole way round. Davy, on the Inside running, gained the verdict by a bare wheel, with Champion 150 yards further back. Time, 7.33 3-5.

AMATEUR HANDICAP, six laps, any machine. First, trophy, value £5 ss, donated by the Farmers' Co-op. Society; second, trophy, £3 3s, donated by Jones and Gilman ; third, medal donated by Mrs. Cramp. F. H. Champion (2% Douglas), 85sec 1 C. Rongomal (7-9 Harley-Davldson), lOsec. 2 L. S. Thorburn (7-9 Harley-Davldson) ssec. 3 Also started: C. Cornford (7-9 Indian) osec, H. Moeller (7-9 Harley-Davldson) scr. Champion, riding well, the scratch men were unable to reduce the distance very much, and he scored a popular win by about threequarters of a lap, with Thorburn a long way further back. Time, 8.4 2-5.

EGMONT HANDICAP, 15 laps, for 7-9 h.p. machines, to do lrain 6sec per lap or over. First, £3O; second, £l2; third, £B. P. Coleman (Indian), scr l W. J. Clarlngbold (Indian), HOsec 2 H. Moeller (Harley-Davldson), HOsec. .. 3 Also started: L. Manghaun (Harley-Davld-son) scr., and E. T. Sutherland (Indian) 135 sec.

This proved a thrilling contest, and Coleman was the quicker of the scratch men to get going, and set out to reduce the limit men's lead,. closely followed by Mangham. Sutherland gave up after the first lap. Clarlngbold maintained the lead for nine laps, when Mangham, who .had passed Coleman ih the, eighth lap, ran Into the lead, with Coleman handy. Coleman here nearlv came to grief leaving the straight, but he' made a wonderful recovery and flew past Mangham, who set out to chase him. Coleman, going on, won comfortably by threequarters of a lap, whilst Moeller, who waa nearly two laps away, secured third place. Time, 14.11 1-5. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP, of eight laps, for machines up to 5-6 h.p. First, £2o; second, £8; third, £3.

Jones and Osgood had gone about two and a half laps, and the middle-markers over ono lap before Mangham left the mark. For the first seven laps, save for a few hundred yards when Osgood look the lead, the order was .lonos, Osgood, Sykes, and Galsford. Here Jones broke down and Sykes ran to the lend, followed by Osgood, Busing, and Moeller, whilst Mimgliam, riding well, was fifth, about three-parts of a lap behind. Sykes maintained his lend and won by a quarter of a mile from Moeller, who beat Busing for second money by about three lengths. Mangham was a good fourth. Time, 11.42 3-5. CONSOLATION RACE, six hips.
