THE WHEEL TAX.
GOVERNMENT TAKE ACTION. ' A COMMISSION TO REPORT. That much discussed matter, the Taranaki County Council's wheel-tar,.', has reached another stage. A* the last meeting of the Council, it will be remembered, it was decided to proceed with the imposition of the tax on vehicles and motors after the holding of the- Taranaki A. and P. Show. As soon us the decision became known the various neighboring local bodies again protested to the Prime Minister, and the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr. James Clarke) has received the following telegram from the Minister of Internal Affairs:—
"Re the Taranaki County vehicle licensing by-laws, I have decided on the appointment of a commission to hold a. public enquiry, and make a report on the question as to whether the Taranaki County Council's power to make by-laws under the Counties' Amendment Act, lfllo, should he revoked.
"Will inform you later the personnel of the commission. "In the meantime I ,have advised the Council that the present by-laws must not be enforced pending the report of the commission."
