RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH. WELLINGTON DEFEAT TARANAKL AN INTERESTING GAME. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Saturday Night. The Itanfurly Shield match between Wellington and Taranakl was played on the Athletic l'ark this afternoon, and was won by the home team, the holders of the shield, by 181 points to 10. There were between 5000 and 6000 spectators. Despite the rain the ground was in%ood condition, but a chilly fcoutherly blew across the park. For the most part the 4,'ame was a contest between the forwards, both sides having good packs. Wellington won the toss, and Tata, raid kicked off against the wind. Wellington attacked for some time. An almost certain score was lost owing to Tilyard dropping the ball. Elliott then had a freo kick, which missed. A nice passing rush among the Wellington backs resulted In Taranakl forcing. Taranakl forwards set up a hot attack, but Wellington managed to hold them, and again penetrated the visitors' territory, where Roberts (f) broke clear. He was supported by Courts and Kivell, but the movement was spoilt by an infringement. Taranakl and Wellington attacked in turn, and at last Roberts picked up, and tho ball passed between C. Tilyard, J. Tilyard, and Corner, -who dashed over. Elliott's kick wept low. Wellington 3, Taranakl nil. 6 Wellington wero penalised immediately after, ut Oliver's kick failed. Wellington Invaded Taranaki's 25, where Corner made a good run, but Algar failed to take a pass, and shortly after the visitors made another great rush, keeping Wellington busy defending. Owing to an Injury Roberts loft the field, and Chesterman filled the vacancy. Algar led a rush, but Wellington wore soon defending again. From a loose rush, Spratt scored. George converted. 18—10. Taranakl were given a penalty for obstruction, but S. Georgo's kick Just missed. From a passing movement among the Taranakl backs, Rogers went close to scoring, but was pushed out. Wellington took play to the visitors' 25, and from a passing bout Chesterman made for the line, but was forced over at the corner. Taranakl charged down the field and an exciting fight followed on Wellington's line, in which Masters was within an Inch of scoring. The game ended without further score.

Received Sept. 7, 5.5 p.m. Capetown, Sept. 4 At Rugby football, a combined team of the Universities of Capotown and Stellenbosch defeated the New Zealanders by nine points to eight. The game resulted In the visitors scoring 11 points to 8. It was n good, fast game. In the first spell the home team, aided by a slight wind, held the advantage, the score at half-tlmo being'Manawatu 8, Wellington 3. In the second half, Wellington had a slight ascendancy and Increased their score by a further eight points. For the winners Barkor and B.
