TROTTING CLUB.

Very keen interest is- being displayed'] : in the establishment of a trotting club in ■New Plymouth, and the attendance at She adjourned meeting, held at the Soldiets' Club last night, further evidenced the popularity of the sport in. local •fiiceUis.. Matters incidental to the control of the club were considered, after ( which, the following officers were elected: I Patrons, Messrs : S. G. Smith, W. T. j Jennings, and Major J. B. Hine, M'sP.; 'president, Mr. A. W. Webster; viceI presidents, Messrs A- Alexander and W. : ,C. Weston; hon. treasurer, Mr. E. ■ Whittle; hon surgeon, Dr. F. E. Fookes■ j isj-tsa. -s.etwr.marv surgeons, Messrs W. , and S. Mason; ccjmmittee, jMeasiAvH. Brook man, H. G. Knight, M. W. McKenzie, T. Richards, C. } J. Honeyfleld, and M. Jones; i auditor, Mr. E. P. Webster. I ; TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") - The Wanganui Jockey Club's winter meeting, which takes place on Thursday and Saturday, is engaging a lot of attention. The writer took a turn over 1 the course yesterday, and everything appears to be in perfect order for the week's racing. The tracks have been well watered during the past fortnight, and tho drizzling rain on Sunday morning and heavy downpour yesterday will take the sting out of the ground, which should be ideal for steeplechasing. A good number of visiting trainers and horses have already arrived, but owing to the weather conditions no jumping work of importance has been done yet.

There was nothing in the rumor that Yellow and 'Black had pulled up bleeding badly after galloping on Sunday morning. The chestnut merely lost a little crimson fluid through striking his nose against the rails while in a playful mood. Trainer "Dick" Johnson had a' most successful time with the trio he took to Marlborough. Henry Clay got away with the Cup; Rawakore won a double, and Lady Black also won a race. Tha last-named mare was flung in at the minimum at Wanganui, and if she can only reproduce her old form, should make her opponents gallop. Winning jockeys at Hawera last week were: McSweeney, Ellis, Gray, and McDonnell, two win? each; Kgan, M. MeCarten, 0. McCarten, Dillamore, Copestake, and Barry, one each. The principal winning owners were: IFt. A. Knight £3OO. C- Percy £3OO, B. McMicken £-265, Mr. Ewart £"253, L. Wcmmick £245, O. Mulrae £2OO. J. P. Kelly £155, F. Hoskin £l4O, ,T. Tyldes-

ley £135, H. Homer £lO5, N. King £IOO, and J Frederic £IOO.

• Frnmark has made good in. 'Stralia, ■ ami witli ordinary luck should win good . money over a distance there. By the way, xt took him 14 seconds longer to : win the St. Leger than it did for Afterglow to compass tho same distance at Trentha/nt this month. A lot of punters 'are wondering if Afterglow' will be sent up for the Connolly Handicap, but it is hardly likely. Marquetenr, Simonides, and Polthogua ran so well last week that they are likely to have big following at the Wanganai meeting. They ought to wiu . a race or two between them. Two of the Hallowmas tribe, Hallow and Seasprite, caught the judge's eye at •Hawera the other (lay. Mr. G. F. Moore's horse has not had many opportunities, but he is likely to bo well patronised by breeders this season. Hallowm.'us is looking very well, and Jack Ba_- : him almost in racing condition.

- *Mi2*=wale's brace of easy victories Inst week have had the effect of bringing him into the limelight, for his Wanganui engagements. The KirVrnhead gelding ha? 8,9 in the Borough Handicap. Arlington was unlucky each day at 'Ffiwcra. In the Egmont Steeples he got the worst of a scrimmage with Yellow and Black, and on the second day his saddle slipped, and Kaau was not able to get the best put of him under the circumstances.
