THE SIZE OF THE MOON.
To the Editor. S'^, —la your issue of Tuesday last is reported a lecture given, at the High School on the subject of astronomy by Mr. Ward, of Wanganui. I had not the pleasure of hearing the lecture but find it difficult to believe that the lecturer made the statement attributed to him in regard to tho size of a moon crater. There could scarcely be>a moon crater "57,000"' mile in diameter, seeing that the diameter of the moon itself is 2160 miles only. Perhaps it is a misprint for 57 miles (Copernicus, one of the' largest mountains, is said to have a crater sft | miles across). Also the. astronomer "Haysmitir"' referred to is probably "Naslnyth," and the"Llch" observatory "Lick."—l am, etc., HJLF.
