(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Feb. 6. The Bcliool baths, which were thrown open to the school children on Wednesday, have been exceedingly well patronised, which shows the need there was fcr something oi the sort. At the School Committee meeting next Monday some rules for the children and for the outside public will doubtless be drawn up, so that it will be of benefit to the town.

understand that Mr P. Were, manager of the Bank of New Zealand here has been promoted to be manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Te Kuiti. Ha lias been manager at Waitara for the past seven years and during that time lias made many friends, both in public and private life, who will regret his departure. „

Captain Roberts, whose lamentable death from the capsizing of the Mahoe is so deeply regretted, had a charming liome, newly furnished, the contents oi which, including oil paintings and curios, are to be sold by auction, on Thursday next, 13th inst., by Messrs Gaustad, Marlow and Co. It is to be hoped foi Mrs Robert's sake that she will have a satisfactory sale. Fat stock is coming into the freezing works in large numbers' The company's paddocks are full of stock, and unless a boat comes before long the freezing chambers will be filled to overflowing •igain. Practically no mutton has been taken for months and this is taking up room which is ordinarily kept for beef. Mr I). Leslie. the owner of the Waitara hotel, has taken over the license from Mr C. G. White who, I understand, is going to take on farming for a change from public-house life.

The town has a very deserted appearance to-day, most of the residents being awo.v at the New Plymouth races. I should say there would be a record attendance at New Plj mouth if all the surrounding country has sent in as large a percentage as Waitara.

The beach, which is usually patronised fairly well on Thursday afternoons, was very poorly patronised to-day. The Seaside Committee has decided to hold a Tabor Shield competition on Thursday, March 27th, that being the only Thursday afternoon suitable in March. It is rather late in the season, but to the inclement weather there has not been much surf-bathing' here yet and it will give the teams a little more time to pre- •?! JOf MBd
