A SERIOUS CHARGE. ~. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Charges alleging a conspiracy to procure abortion were made at the Magistrate's Court to-day against Joseph Hill, Jean Collyns and Alice Scoble. Hill and Collyns were further charged with attempting to supply certain articles witli intent to procure abortion. Accused pleaded not guilty and were committed for trial, bail being allowed. i-QLDIERS' CLUB WAR MEMORLAL, Timaru, Last Night. Cabinet having decided to permit funds to be .raised for war memorials in the shape of returned soldiers' clubs, a meeting of the Timaru War Memorial Committee and returned soldiers last night differed on the question as to whether a soldiers' club and war memorial should be combined or separate schemes. The soldiers feared that separation would injure the club proposal. After discussion, it was decided to adopt the combined scheme, the building to be called the Soldiers' Club War Memorial. The cost, it is suggested, is to be £12,000. The Returned Soldiers' Association has sonic hundreds in hand, and Mr. Haling (the Mayor), who presided at the meeting, promised to give his honorarium of £2OO. CLASSES FOR TERRITORIAL OFFICERS. Wellington, Last Night. Classes of instruction for Territorial officers and N.C.O.'s in machine-gun work, musketry, physical training and infantry drill commenced at Trentham camp today, some fifty officers and N.0.0.'s attending from various parts of the Dominion. These officers and N.C.O.'s have been specially selected in their districts as being suitable to disseminate the in- , struction received to their units. The classes will extxend over a fortnight. The system of instruction laid down is in accordance with the latest principles of military teaching, the expert instruction being centralised instead or being dispersed as formerly. Upon completion of this course another course will be !/ld throughout the training year. large purchases of native land: Wellington, Last Night. The Minister of Native Affairs stated that his department has practically completed the purchase of 12,13 C acres of land (Rangitoto Tuhua 9 A) in the King Country. Negotiations for similar purchases were proceeding. Representatives of the Government were also buying land near Tokaana (south of Take Taupo). where about 50,000 acres had already been acquired. THE STEAMER WAIROA. Auckland, Last Night. Five of the crew of the steamer Wairoa, which ran ashore at Waima bar on Monday, arrived in Auckland to-day. They stated that the supplies running short they went into Tairua for flour. There was a heavy sea running at the time, but they managed to reach their' destination. While returning they got into the trough of the sea and broke the rudder chain, with the result that she .piled up. At low water the vessel is dry, but she immediately fills up at high I water. The owners of the vessel are to leave this evening to see if there is any possibility of Balving tTTe vessel.
