T.J.C. RACES. S7L3ERT GOLD ARRIVES. Desert Gold arrived by the afternoon , train oil Saturday and had a great reception at the railway station, a crowd 01 over a thousand being present, eager to catch a glimpse of the champion mare. She certainly looked well as she stepped out of the box, having evidently suffered very little by the trip up from Wanganui, where she arrived from Woodville the previous day. Her trainer, Fred Davis, arrived later by cai. Desert Gold is in fine fettle, and since her return lroin Australia, less than a fortnight ago, is said to have put up some good gallops. JSlie can be relied upon to do herself justice against her more youthful opponent, Gloaming, the contest forming the main attraction at this meeting, and drawing followers of the sport from all parts of New Zealand. Already a large number of visitors have arrived. The meeting this year promises to be a record one in every respect, and the completeness of the arrangements in every department ensures thorough success. The musical programme is in the hands of the. Citizens' Band, and Mr. F. W. G. McLeod, the bandmaster, intends that this shall be a special feature. Mr. Wooller will control the catering, Mrs. May the tea kiosk, and Mr Whittle the re- ( freshment booth For the convenience of ( South Turanaki special delayed trains will be run. In the Fifth Taranaki Stakes Desert Gold will be ridden by H. Gray, whilst Deeley will, as usual,, have the mount ou Gloaming. Golden Grafton, by winning twice at -Takapuna, has incurred 121b penalty, and will carry 11.4, Dick Johnston returned on Saturday with Rewipoto, Henry Clay and Rawakore, who have been fulfilling engagements at Wellington, Pahiatua, etc H. Telford arrived on Saturday with 80-Peep, Cotillion, Active, Fulica ai, Philomela, and S. Reid arrived in charge of Mr. X Goring Johnston's team—Birkenvale, Cherry Mart and Hurry Up. Other horses to arrive were Kites and EestfuL Writes the Dominion sporting scribj: At one stage it looked certain that the Taranaki Jockey Club would cut out the weight-for-age race from its programme, but the meeting between Desert Gold and Gloaming will be such a good drawing card that the race is saved for some time. It is understood that the club forwarded a special invitation to Mr. Lowry to be present with the mare, and as he has won the race the last two years he agreed to race his mare again. Her trainer, F. Davis, is most hopeful of her chance, as she has been sprinting well in her work H. Gray will ride the mare, and B. Deeley will be on Gloaming. There will be much interest in the draw for positions, as jit is considered that the Dorse drawing the inside will have an advantage. When Estland beat Bimeter in 11)17 lie started fro„i the inside and only just won, and Finmark, with a similar advantage, only just scraped home from Koesian last year. Finmark caw a very short price, but his backers got a great shock when he had to bo hard ridden at the finish to stall off lioesian. A meeting of the committee of the Jig,mont Racing Club was held on Friday night, when it was decided to apply for May 7 and 8 for the winter meeting.
