Mr G. P. Gow presided at the meeting o£ the Chamber ol Commerce held last evening, 20 members being present. Comment was made on the persistent late running of the South mail express and Mr Wilkinson, .Member lor Egiuont, was requested to present- a protest passed by the Chamber to the General Manager The proposed hydro - electric scheme was reviewed at length, Mr tiow stating that chamber believed a fairly comprehensive scheme might evolve Air Wilj kinson stated one engineer had notified him that one river alone in Taranaki could produce SOCK) h.p. and a second was capable of 2000 h.p. The town of EHham was the only one without electric energy, and he believed it impossible for any town to make any progress without such energy The introduction of a scheme of tl.ua character was vitally important to the farmers, who would find conditions rnade_ lighter and brighter if these conveniences were obtainable- He thought they should not wait for the Government, but proceed with their own needs, and in a few years this could be accomplished. He thought 1600 hp. would supply Eltliam county and borough After a little further discussion it was resolved to call a representative meeting to discuss the Electric Powers Boards Ac-t, and that factories, local Jiodies, etc., be requested to send delegates. Visits are anticipated this month by the local Oddfellows Lodge of the District officers. Latterly the Order has made many members (particularly amongst the ladies) that it lias been decided to further increase the size of the building which is all too small for social purposes, Part of the new structure will hold a billiard table so in the winter months whilst waiting for a quorum the early birds can enjoy a game. Kaponga Bifle Chib has been resuscitated. The club has in the past turned out many sterling shots, and it is pleasing to sec many of these are taking an active interest. Dave Roots, who won a New Zealand Championship, gained hit? early training with the elub, whilst A- It. Guy has frequently demonstrated with the rifle that lie has few equals if any superiors. . Mr Guy has been elected President and Mr G- Smith Vice-President, whilst the committee includes another fine marksman, Hollard, and a Gallipoli hero, Jim Charters. In pre-war days the latter was a sterling forward and has represented Taranaki and, his experiences in Turkey and Franco should have improved his marksmanship. Inglewood Rifle dub are generally on the look-out for a match so here's an opportunity of getting in early with a challenge.
