WELLINGTON VITAL STATISTICS.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. One hundred and seventeen mof* deaths were registered in Wellington this month than in January of last year. There were fewer births, but more marriages this month than in the corresponding period of last year. Details are as follow, the figures for January of last year being in parentheses!— Births 187 (227), deaths 178 (01), mar-ria-ges 73 (00). Of the 73 marriages this month 31 were in the office of the registrar (Mr. J'oulton), as compared with 32 out of 68 last January

CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER.

Wellington, Last NightArthur Sinclair, formerly employed as ambulance driver by! the Wellington Hospital Board, appeared in the Magistrate's Court to-day charged with having unlawfully caused tho death of Denis Diver, thereby committing the crime of manslaughter. A MEMORIAL TO \VI PERE. Gisborne, Last Night.

A memorial to the late Wi Pere, pro' "posed by a Native committee, was sanctioned by tho borough council on a pubU\ reserve. After the work was began a petition was circulated against the proponal by,survivors of the Poverty Bay massacre and others'. The council decided to hear both sides. Tho conference took place to-day. There was no decision, but it is believed a committee of the council decided to recommend to th» fall council to allow this memorial to he erected on the site originally fixed o» the water-front.
