Mrs M. A. M*Koy, .Peridaros Street, has received word that her son, Corporal H. H. ("Lai.") M'Koy, who is suffering from gunshot wounds in the left leg and * back and is in Walton Hospial, is improving.

The many friends of the Hon. W. Member Reeves and Mrs. Beeves will regreat to learn that, according to information received, their son, Flight-Lieuten-ant Fabian P./Hceveß, R.N.A.8., who wa« reported missing on June 6, is now believed to have been kitted on that date. He was only 21 years of age. Mr. A. T. Cavill, Inspector of Post Offices at Wanganui, has been appointed postmaster at Hastings in the place of Mr. F, Perrin, who is about to retire on superannuation. Mr. W. Calla, ghan, postmaster at Hawera, has retired on superannuation, and has been succeeded by Mr. S. G. Daniel, promoted from the charge of the Raneiora Post Office 6

Lance-Corporal Fricklcton, of Blackball, South Island, who was awarded the Victoria Cross recently rn France, received his medal from the hand* ot the King at an investiture at Ibrox Park, Glasgow, when two other V.C.'a, cue of the Lancashires,, and the other of the Gordon Highlanders were aha decorated. After pinning the medal on Frickleton's tunic, the King congratulated him on his bravery, asked him how he was feeling after his wounds, and said that he hoped he would.be Jong able to wear his medal. The King, on learning that Corporal Frickleton had been gassed, the hope that lie would take care of his health, and that he would soon recover his normal condition.

Lieut.-Colonel R. Young, C.M.G., D.S.O. (Marton), of tho Canterbury Regiment, has been appointed to the command of a battalion of the Rifle Jirigudo in France, which fell vacant through the death in action of Briga dier General F. E. Johnson, C.B. He has been granted the temporary rank of brigadier general. Brigadier General Young was very unfortunate in-re. ceiving a rather severe wound the day after he took over command of Ms brignde. He was, in fact, in the act ot taking it over from Acting-Brigadier A. E. Stewart, when he received a bullet wound through-the neck. Injury to;the lung has since developed, and it is un« likely that General Young wiU be able to return to duty for a month or two. An old and highly-respected eitiwn of Auckland passed away at his Jate reildenec, Cleveland road, Parnell, 6n Monday morning, in the person of Mr. Gabriel -Lewis. Mr; Lewis was- one of threo brothers, who came out to Auckland rfom England many years ago, ana started in business as wholesale merchants. After carrying on for aome years the partnership was dissolved,-Mr, Lewis then starting an auctioneering, and later a furniture, business. The de« ceased gentleman is survived by a widow and ten children, four sons and six daughters, Mr. Louis Lewis, of Auckland, is the eldest son, while another, Mr. Lionel Lewis, went to ftio front a* a member of the Australian Force*, and was wounded several months ago. Miss Sybil Lewis, the accomplished musieian, ia a daughter of tho lato Mr. Gabriel Lewis.

Mackenzie, the seated Rhodes candidate, has had a brilliant scholastic career, besides being prominent in athletics. He is the son of Professor Hugh Mackenzie, aftd was born a: St. Andrew's, Scotland, on November 2(1 1800 and arrived in New Zealand when two years of age. While at The Terrace school, Wellington, he passed hia proficiency examination and gained an Education Board scholarship, entering the Wtllington College as a day pupil in 1010. At the college he secured a senior free place and,- later, the Levin Languages Scholarship, a Rhodes Scholarship (IsU A Turnbiill Scholarship (Ist), and, in 1013, passed "with credit'' for the .Tumor University Scholarship, Although he became 17 years of age only four days before the examination, he was top for Wellington. Young Mackenzie entered Victoria College in 1014, and his career there Ims been brilliant. In 1915 he was planted a bursary in addition to the Turnbull Scholarship; he kept second yea'.' terms in Latin (Ist class), English Ist class), and French (repeat Ist class), f.'ly first-class pass that year. In 1016 he kept third terms in Latin (repeat Ist leass), and French (repeat Ist class), In each subject only two first-class passes were given, and Lt. Mackenzie secured the year's record with the highest marks in the class. He has since won. both his B.A. final and senior scholar* ships in Latin and French. It has been said of Lt. Mackenzie that he has the tme sportsman's love of life in the wilds; indeed, he'prefers such forms of sport as hunting and shooting to the less strenuous forms of sport in the city. His keen sense of his responsibilities caused him to enlist for service with the forces as soon as possible after attaining the ago at which recruits' are accepted. *
