THE WAR LOAN.

;£1,G30,000 NOW REPORTED. ■•'- ' EXAMPLES OF PATRIOTISM. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. £ 1,030.000 is now reported, or on the way. (.'ash receipts reported to Wellington now reach a total of £OOO.OOO. There are also amounts which total £1,0,10,000 known to be coming in: thus the present amount, excluding banks and brokers not yet reported, is £1,(130.000. This includes throe more amounts of £200,UU» each. The circular to friendly societies is already beginning to have a good effect. The secretary to one branch wrote saylii.lt that his branch was going to do all it could and invest £llOO immediately. As examples of patriotism it may he mentioned that the llawke's Bay brokers, who deal with a large number of moneyed people, have offered to do all the loan work free of charge, and have announced that they will not claim brokerage from the Government. This is an excellent lead for other parts o( the Dominion, and is patriotism of a practical kind. A gentleman in Wanganni has oti'cred the Government a holding of 7 per cent, debentures in exchange for -1J per cent, war bonds. Carterton Oddfellows are investing £3OO. The following is a copy of a letter addressed by Sir Joseph Ward to the clergy of every denomination in the Dominion: Dear Sir. —There is no period in the history of a nation in which the leaders of its .religious life can more properly guide their people than when the very existence of national ivacdom is at stake; when, after pouring out the life-blood of its noblest sons, the is,ue still remains undetermined; when a supreme and final effort is required to secure that peace which ever comes after a successful struggle with evil. A battle against evil, in whatever form, necessitates sacrifice and brings forth the highest qualities of man. -Modern civili-ation and modern life require that to succeed in any great undertaking money must be provided in proportion to the greatness of the object. The war loan which is. now placed before the people of this Dominion is just as necessary to success as are soldiers, munitions, and commissariat. Without the funds to purchase the. latter our brave defenders 'would be left an easy prey to the powerful foe. There is no force more potent in raising the nation to a full sense of its responsibility than the spiritual and moral one. You are one of those whose life is set apart tb nurturing and directing such a force. May I ask your co-operation in raising the funds necessary to obtain ultimate victory? -Many will listen to an appeal from you who would never bo reached through other channels. I am relying upon you for assistance for an appeal to your people, based upon the hkihest motives, and I. know that I shall not ask in vain.—Yours faithfully, -T. ft. WARD. Minister of Finance. The Taranaki Land, Building and Investment .Society yesterday afternoon decided to invest £IOOO in the War Loan.
