GENERAL. The weather to-day was decidedly unfavorable for the shooting enthusiasts out for hares—a misty day with penetrating showers. Still some braved the elements. 'J'o-raorrow several parties will he out. Mr. J. 11. Thompson has kindly aliened the shop next Mr. Herbert's, draper, to be used as a receiving depot for the results of the outing. On Tuesday the hares will be railed to Wellington. 'I he new cooling rooms at the Stratford dairy factory are verv complete and capable of holding 1000 boxes. Mr. ]■'. J. McDonald, manager, kindly showed me over the premises. My stay in this particular locality was very brief, as an Arctic temperature, though essential to butter, is poor company to man during July. Two creameries and the main factory started receiving to-day. so it will not be long before the milk carts and waggons are to be found on all roads in the province.

I am reliably informed that a Swiss farmer lias slated that he can place his hands on ten Swiss families for the next milking Wason. Evidently Taranaki looms largely in the eyes—and minds—of the .Swiss, and probably there are many of that/nationality who wish there wore a few iiiore thousand of their own kin here. What the 'Second Division League and those at the front think on the matter would be very interesting.

The yearly meeting of the Taranaki Cnite<l Friendly Societies' Hospital Association is being held here to-day, delegates from all parts of the province being present. The proceedings were not open to the. press.

}'r!\ate Vernon .Shotter. r.ot Roy Shotter, as printed in this column recently, was wounded at Me_-sine3 and transferred to the base depot in France.

The romantic side of' life must not be lost sight of, as romance has a direct bearing on our stability. Young men are requested to fall in love and then into Ben. J. There arc many useful things to admire (and buy) in Mr. C. K. James' warehouse. In the windows there is Doulton ware that would please mother to have as a present. For poor old father there is a wide range in brian and G.B.D. pipes, and cigars of varying decrees of strength and prices. Sister Susie would be enraptured with one oi the brooches or bangles displayed, whilst the '•book-worm'' of the family would also be pleased to handle and Tead souk of the latest fiction offering here.*
