A stranger coining to Taranaki might ' veil be pardoned for expressing surprise \ at the province possessing three agricultural shdws. But this is the case. To- • day's function marks the sixth show of ■ Stratford Association, and it also demon- • strateg the wonderful strides it has made • i-in popularity. The executive has been • actively engaged in furthering the inter ' ests of the farming community by thesj • shows, and as the years go by the value ' of the work will become more apparent. • The present president, Mr. E. Jackson, • > has been an active worker since the As sociation started, and he has .twice enjoyed tie privilege (and work) of pre- > sident and also served two seasons as ■ secretary. Messrs. B. Dingle and B. 5 Masters (past presidents) are also still , actively engaged in'keeping interest go- • ing. The present secretary, Mr. A. D. ~ Stanley, is now well up in all details, ' > this being his second year in the posi- . tion. That the officials have worked

iard in persuading farmers to help them- • «elves by exhibiting their cattle, horses, . (etc., is shown by the 'bulkf catalogue . containing a complete list of .entries. [Stock has been freely entered, and bust- • men people, recognising the value of a ishow to the district, have willingly lent '■ iwhat assistance they could to make the , strong in membership. The > i'fine grounds give every opportunity to ..show stock and other exhibits to the nrf— ■'loo. The area, some 40 ■ , Winie for many years to come, ■ to the town, is valuable ■ buildings are all new, •veil looked after. To i of where does all the to answered briefly in > €SOO alone, whilst the grounds, wages, and ■ - 'onnt to a considerable ..i,-inly spent in the dis-

•TV '•« nl * B ' as re P resen^e^ ; n .. ... ..!'.:on ring showed that v ery little affected by the coaiiuuoiH rain. They were invari- •' ably shown 111 the best of condition, and much admired by true lovers of the pedigree stock. Naturally the cow predominated in the watter of numbers, and the several types of leading milking strains ■were closely scrutinised by tin; critical. ■Horses were also shown in great numbers. The competition ring was surround*ed by an eager crowd of enthusiasts who generally agreed with the judge's verdicts J%he entry of dogs was also satisfactory. ' j and competition in several classes was (keen. Sheep were not very numerous ' trat some fine animals from flocks owned !jjy Messrs W. B. Grant, New Plymouth, jand J. McL. Blair, Hawera, were on the 'grounds. Home industries, as expected, ifwerp a popular feature of the show, and Ithe judge's placing in these classes was 'too light task. The cow-teating by boys fa a feature that should have good rekitdte, the farmers of the future taking treat interest, ill their work, and showing discernment that betokened comj mendable knowledge of the good and bat '^points.in cattle. Side-shows greatly en- ■ livened proceedipgs and made the aftcr- ! noon pass pleasantly with all. The at{tendance was very satisfactory, and arjiangements -for keeping judging up ti itime very complete. \,- The attendance of the public was very igood and up to last year's total. The j boys' competition proved a very attractive addition to the programme. The | stewards of each department stuck closej]y to their duties, the Press being 'greatly indebted to Mr. B. Masters i (Press steward) for his unremitting attention. The exhibits of farm imjplements, milking machines, motor cars, letc., were well up to past years, and af--1 forded farmers every opportunity of seeling the latejt and best in these lines. (The weather, on the whole, was very good, only a couple of light showers falling. The plantation trees are now of sufficient height to afford an excellent ibreak-wind, and with clear sky the aftertoon passed very pleasantly. To-day is People's Day, and a record (attendance should be secured. The com(petition amongst horses and ponies promises to be particularly keen, whilst the cattle "expert", will have ample time to pass judgment on the work of the judges ■ as, .excepting horses, the judging was practically completed the first (Viy. President E. Jackson, with his committee, and secretary, are to be complimented on the successful opening of the 1910 . ture, and there is every reason lo be]j P a mat the Association's Show this , meet, will prove, financially and otherwise, quitß np to the 1015 standard.

THE DAIRY CATTLE. The disnlay of dairy cattle was undoubtedly "commensurate with the ira-jJoi-mnea of the industry to the district, o. which Stratford is a centre. Every fcrr-d wa» Very strongly represented, a (special feature being the strong showing in the snide or crossbred section. The 4t|t|Ses> .tspecially in the Jersey, crossbred lections, had a particularly tunic in cr their awards,

and it was late in the afternoon when they finished. In Ayrshires the competition was not so keen, but some fine animals were exhibited. In females, Olson Bros. (Egmont Village) had a great win, scoring first in every section, besides securing champion and two sec onds. They also scored first in the yearling bull class. W. Hall had a fine innings in the bulls, obtaining first and champion with Little Jim, and two other firsts and a second.

Jerseys were a very strong class. The judge (Mr. \V. J. Hall, of Thames Valley) stated that lie had expected to see a great lot of Jerseys in Taranaki, nor was he disappointed. He considered that on the whole they were a very good lot, particularly the aged cows, yearling heifers, and yearling bulls. Some comment was made on the fact that the judge reversed his Palmerston decision in placing C. Goodson's Mercedes Noble Lady first in the yearlings, and the same owner's Bell Bird fourth, whereas at Palmerston the latter was first and the former third. The judge explained that Bell Bird had in the interim grown plainer, while-the other animal had improved The prize-winning yearling bulls were both fine animals, but he considered Mountain View Gold the more stylish and better constitutioned. W. V. Harkness' Rozel's Sultan secured the championship, and C. W. Kcube's Protection of Meadow Bank the reserve, In the cows, O'Donnell's Bilberry V added to her laurels, the same owner's Perfection securing reserve.. . The Holsteins saw well-known breeders in A., J. Galliclian and W. I. Lovelock (Palmerston North) competing against Taranaki's best. Local owners new to the Stratford ring were Messrs Clifford Bros. (Lepperton) and W. James (Bell Block). Johnson's King Rose de Ivol, and A. J. Gallichan's Holland Queen's Son, repeated their Ha vera performances by securing champion and re serve; whilst W. James secured tli" championship with his cow Segis Galatea. His Hawtra champion, Nazle Fayr.e Segis, only secured third in her class, being defeated by A. J. Gallichan's Diamond Imported, .which secured reserve, and Clifford Bros.' Long Beach Michaelmas Daisy. In the grades there were some great dairy animals, but a few were very plain. Taken all through, they were a fine lot. Fat cattle were few in number, but of good quality.

PIGS. The- competition in pigs was not as keen as was to be expected, considering the importance that animal is assuming as a side line to dairying, but some splendid ape.-iments were shown (nil grown in the district), and it is pleasing to note some new exhibitors in this section. It is a pity that tlie Stratford public were not given an opportunity of seeing the Porirua Mental Hospital's magnificent specimens, which, with Waikato and Hawkc's Bay pigs, were shown at Hawera last week.

JUVENILE JUDGING. Considerable interest was evinced in the competition which the Association inaugurated for the judging of Jerseys by schoolboys, and so successful did this prove that it is certain to be introduced as a 'feature of future shows, when it will be extended to other breeds. No less than 25 lads, embracing practically the whole of Taranaki from as far apart as Xgaere, Urenui, and Eahotu, had entered, and their methods of adjudication were closely followed by a large crowd of keen cattle judges. The lads had to judge three cows on points, and three cards were given for remarks. The boys went about their business with a thorough attention to detail, and showed that they had a good knowledge of where to look for the points. The result of the competition was not available, as the judge (Mr. E. Griffiths) has the onerous task of going through 75 separate cards before he can disclose the winner.
