PATRIOTIC WORK.

THE WANGANUI HUSSARS. There was a large meeting of the subcommittee of the Patriotic Committee at the Soldiers' Club room last evening, when the visit of the Wanganui Hussars Club, to aid the effort for Soldiers' Comforts Week, was considered. Mr. 11. Brookman presided. Mr. Higginbottom, for the Hussars, wrote that his company proposed to put on: (1) Mock court and incidentals; (2) surprise packet and parcel scheme; (3) spinning jenny; (4) any other scheme that opportunity will permit. Continuing, he said that the Wanganui boys held a record for New Zealand, having in one dav's session at Wanganui, collected £2OOO. They hoped to raise £4OO or £SOO in New Plymouth, and trusted that the fact of their coining up would' stimulate and benefit the fund. The members would arrive in New Plymouth at. 8 o'clock on Friday, change in the train, and be ready straight away with surprise envelopes. They are bringing a large Union Jack for auction, and will be accompanied by a legal gentleman to act as judge of the Mock Court, but assistance would be wanted from two or three local legal representatives. I It was resolved that the Pierrots meet the Hussars on the Friday evening'at the train, along with the Band and the Fire Brigades. A letter was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs sanctioning raffles, but the "spinning jenny" could not be allowed. The musical portion of the programme on Saturday, 2Sth, was left in the hands of Messrs. F. Hooker and Kay. The chairman reported that accommodation for the Hussars bad been arranged for at the various hotels, and members stated that a muuber of gifts bad already been received for "Paddy's Market." " It was decided that parcels may be left at Hooker Bros.' depot in Enmont Street. The offer of the Hussars to auction a Union Jack was accepted, and Messrs. Brookman, J. McLeod, and J. E. Hill were appointed a committee to arrange re the Mock Court, and also to manage the raffles. An offer from Mr. Jas. Woods for a wirc-waiking exhibition was accepted, and the meeting adjourned after discussing a number of other piopositions that were advanced. The committee will meet again on Saturday evening next.
