THOSE WHO HAVE FALLEN

Captain W. J. Shepherd of New Plymonth, who was severely wounded in ths Gallipoli campaign, has made a complete recovery from his wounds, after being fifteen months in various hospitals in Egypt and England, and is now back with the New Zealand forces in France Mrs. D. Bowie, Belt Road, has received news that two of her sons, A. and R. C. Bowie, have been wounded. The former, who was a member of the Herald morhanical staff before enlisting, received his injury on October 1, while his brother, who had already been wounded twice, was wounded on September 30, but is remaining with his unit. One of the sad features of the war is the loss of so many of our brilliant men on the threshold of their career. A case in point is Lieutenant Arthur P. Castle killed in action, in France, who was the son of Mr.. J. 0. A. Castle, of Petonc. He. went'to'Wellington College from Petone school as a Queen's Scholar, and from Wellington College to Victoria University College with a Turiibull Scholarship. 'Lieutenant Castle graduated M.A. with honors in 1913. After two, years at the Wellington Training College, he was appointed a resident master at the Gisbornc High School, where he remained until he enlisted as a private in the 4th Reinforcements. He received his commission as a 2nd. lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion of the Rifle Brigade, and gained his full lieutenancy before his battalion left Egypt for France, He had done very good work in France—on one occasion "being officer in command of a party which made a most successful raid on the German trenches. Lieutenant Castle was twenty-five years of age.

Mr. H. Tancred yesterday received a cable from his son, 'Rifleman B. 8. Tancred, who was wounded in France on September 23, that he was going on well.

A cable lias boon received to the effect that Private Edward R. Low, son of Mr. K. R. Low. of Moturoa, was wounded, on September 30. 'Private Low was previously in the employ of Mr. H. Jury. He went to the front with the. main body. Private G. R. Garratt, whose name appeared in a recent casualty list, was some years ago a resident of Kaponga, where he was well known. He is a brother of Mr. M. J). Garratt, of Manaia, and left with the 11th Reinforcements. Another brother, Gordon, is at present with the Xew Zealandera in England.

Mr. and Mrs. Marshall, of Kakaramea, have received word that their son, Rifleman T. Marshall, had succumbed to wouihJs received on the Somme front. Mahoe and Lowgarth settlers and others will be sorry to learn that Mr. Dave Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Grif, Jones, of Mahoe, is among the wounded. This soldier was well-known in the district and left with the 9th Reinforce' ments in January last, first proceeding to Egypt and then to France, where he saw a good deal of fighting.—Post.
