FUN ON THE SANDS.

I GALA DAY AT EAST END AX ENJOYABLE OUTING. The picnic spirit wan encouraged yeV. terday by the glorious summer weather which prevailed, -making the seaside a particularly attractive place, and all the beaches around New Plymouth were 'thronged with people throughout the day. The- East End beach—always a popular place in tine weather—offered additional attractions yesterday, for it was tl\- i.ciMie of ii patriotic gala in aid of funds for wounded soldiers, and hundreds of peniile -went there to while away the hours amidst the delightful surroundings, and to satisfy their own pleasure concurrently with ' helping Us soldiers. All the attractions of the East End foreshore were employed to make the day a pleasant one. On the reserve fringing the beach the trees provided welcome shelter, and grouped here and there were numerous picnic parties, hap|py in their leisure amicl*t the cool surroundings, while occasionally they "Ventured on to the beach or went for a splash in the briny. Skle-shqws.in great variety were stationed in ill part* «t the reserve, and they pr»ved highly entertaining to young and old, while several refreshment stalls provided all the wants of the holiday-makers. Te Henul river, sliaded from the hot sun in tht afternoon, was lined with people, who enjoyed the sjght of the young people bathing in the stream, and many mad* journeys nip the river by boat. ■ The beach was the play-ground of the chil- [ dren, who found a wealth of amusement on the sands, while the donkeys were kept busily employed. In the turf swimmers were very numerous, and the whole aspect of freedom and joyfumess was enhanced by the bright music b£ the Citizens' Band. For this occasion the supporters of the different oeaside reserves 'had joined forces to assist in making the gala day a success. Captain Allen was assisted in his secretarial duties by Messrs W. Roeh (East End), R. G. Moverley. (Kgv/aroa Park), and R. 0. Ellis (Ngamotu) and they were supported by the follow- ' ing executive: Messrs J." R. Hill, 0. Carter, C. E. Bellringer, R. J. Dear*, A. E. Sykes, J. Hayden, and V. Beale. The side-shows, and unions, sports, etc., were well supervised by Messrs P. C. J. Bellringer, Benneek, Beal, Ward, Haydes, Deare, Elliot, Feek, Moverley, Russell, Saunders, Hughes, HoneyEeld, HofN Mann, and Smallbone. The executive was able to extend th» stall facilities, through the kindness of Mr. J. R. Roch. the stall contractor, who allowed the Ngamotu Committee ta run a stall, and who also gave a donation of £5. The results of the principal competitions are:— Bays' relay swimming race:' Hall, Boon, Hoffman, and Muttermore 1. Married ladies' race: Mrs. H. Wood* 1, Airs. Shepherd 2. Stepping the chain: J. Home and C. Sampson were the first in each of two competitions. Ladies' race: Miss Mead 1, Cake guessing competition (weight lO'/ilb): Miss E. Roch guessed the correct weight. Baby show (24 entries).—Under six months: Fred. J. Bradley 1, Nanoy Croot 2. Under 12 months: Gowan Jenkins 1, E. Booker 2. Over 12 months: Horaee Simpson 1, Albert Page 2. The judges were Mrs. Davidson (Tikorangij and Mrs. Eva (Franklcy Road). Ham guesaing (weight 161b 9%0z.): Eight competitors each guessed 181b 86*. and lots were drawn for the winners, who were Mrs. J. Bell 1, Mr. Blomley 2. Sheep guessing (weight ]22y 4 lb): Oct. rectly guessed by W. F, Terrill. '<- THE TAKINGS. The takings amounted to £ 130 12s 2d, made up as follows:—Gate money, £OB •s »d; donation (Mr.-J. D.
