WAITARA PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL.

The much-boomed carnival for the Wounded Soldiers' Fund at Waitara. take? place this week on the Camp Re: serve. For some, weeks past quite ail army of workers have been strenuously engaged in preparations for this event. Proceedings commence on Thursday with a big floral procession (headed by the Municipal Band), in which decorated ! warns, bicycles, motor-cars and lorries, Darktown Fire Brigade, tradesmen's carts and poster costumes will appear. On the grounds the following attractions will be provided:—The Horticultural Sh.iv.-. including flowers, fruit, vegetables, and home industries' sections, the whole forming a magnificent display worthy of a Lnng inspection. Other interesting exhibits will be the jumble stall, sweets stall, tulip garden, hoop la, gipsy fortune teller and a trolly tramway. The refreshment booth will be in evidence throughout the Carnival, where teas, high teas, fruits and salads will be available. The musical programmes will be quite a leading feature each afternoon and evening as conberts (vocal and instrumental), minstrel shows and children's concerts have been arranged, the leading artists and amateurs of New Plymouth and. Waitara have generously offered their services. Friday will be the big sports day, on which an enormous attendance is expected. No less than 22 events are on the programme, and many of our best athletics will compete. The horse events are bound to be a big draw, as many members of the Hunt Club and their horses will take part. Saturday will be principally schools' day. The scholars from various schools will compete in Swedish drills, tug of war and relay races, and these events promise to bring in a big attendance of country people. The costume cricket match has induced several of our "has beens" to again "don the colors" and do their little bit for the Carnival. Saturday night the fun will be fast and furious. Special musical programmes are promised when all the favorite items will be repeated. The ground will be brilliantly illuminated on this (and every) evening with electricarc lamps, and it is intended to wind up the Carnival with a big fancy costume "al fresco" ball, at which all the stall holders and assistants are requested to appear in costume and conclude with the Battle of the Confetti. Altogether Carnival week in Waitara promises to be a supreme effort for the most deserving fund ever established, viz., the support of the wounded soldiers and their dependents, and everybody is expected to help.
