AUSTRIA'S EVASIVE REPLY. 1 RE THE ANOONA. Washington, Dir. 17. Austria's reply re the Aneona is understood to be evasive, unsatisfactory, and entirely unacceptable to the United States.

THE SITUATION GRAVE. NO AMERICAN DEMANDS MET. Received Dec. 18, 8.10 pjn. Washington, Dec. 18. A hurriedly-called Cabinet meeting discussed the Note, but no announcement was made. The position is regarded a3 most grave. Reuter says that diplomatic relations are not likely to be broken off until there is a further exchange of Notes. When pressed for a statement Mr. Lansing said that the reply did not meet any of the American demands.

' AUSTRIA'S INSOLENCE. AMERICA DETERMINED. Received Dec. 19, 5.5 p.m. Washington, Dec. 18. Austria has denied the United States' contentions, and she says that previous Notes proved that the blame for the disaster was placeable to the submarine commander. The United States, in replying, reiterates the demands of her former Note.
