THE WAR FUND.
WEEKLY COLLECTION SCHEME. SOME ACTION TO BE TAKEN. The interesting suggestion made by the Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess) that the war fund should he increased by weekly contributions of some small sum by everyone who can give will probably result in some workable scheme being drawn up shortly. Speaking to a Daily News representative yesterday, the Mayor said that the Mayoress should call a public meeting of ladies to discuss proposals for carrying out a systematic house-to-house canvass, and lie agreed with the ideas in the main. As he said the other night, if half the population of New Plymouth gave a shilling a week for each person, it would represent £2OO a week, or £IO.OOO a year, but if some people could only give sixpence or threepence a week, there were ott«?rs who could contribute two shillings or more. Mr. Burgess said that, as be was going to Wellington to-day, he could not do anything until next week, when he would again take the matter in hand. The chairman of the Patriotic Committee (Mr. J. E. Wilson) also agrees with the idea. "I very much favor something on the lines suggested," said Mr Wilson yesterday. "Such collections would have the great advantage of being official collections, and if a good sum was raised in this way the necessity for special appeals from time to time would be done away with. There is no doubt that the best method of collecting money is in small contributions, for people will much more readily give small amounts than large sums I agree with tlie idea that the services of a number of lady collectors should be obtained, each lady to have a definite district in which to collect c-very week. If New Plymouth is to make any sort of reasonable provision for the claims that will be made on the patriotic funds we will have to have quite; a large fund. We have in hand now only a few thousand pounds, and we must have a very much bigger fund."
