OPENING OF WEST END GREEN. Had the brilliant weather of yesterday morning continued during the afternoon the formal opening of the West End.Green would have been an exceptionally enjoyable occasion, but the showers somewhat marred the pleasure of the visitors. The Club is to be congratulated on the excellent condition to which the green has been brought, for, in siptn of the weather, it played true and fairly keen. Referring to the all-absorbing war topic, he said there were some who thought all sports and pastimes should be given up during this time of national stress, but he could not see that such a course would be beneficial. All the bowlers in the Dominion were doing their best to raise money for patriotic purposes and to alleviate the sufferings ,of those at the front. Some of them had already gone with the forces, and others would follow, so that he was confident bowlers as a class were not backward in responding to their country s call. Referring to last season, he said the Club had every reason to be gratified with its success in winning the Taranaki Banner, the Taranaki New "V ear s Tournament, and the IVanganui Tournament, while one of its members Mr. V. H. Ileal, was runner-up for the Taranaki Champion Singles. Mr. Real's name had been inscribed on the shield, imt on behalf of the Club he asked that gentleman to accept a gold medal as a souvenir of the occasion. Mr. Hill then handed a medal to Mr. Beal amid rousing cheers, Mr. M. Eraser, president of the New Plymouth Club, warmly thanked the. West End members for the hearty welcome received. Referring to the fund the Taranaki Bowling Centre was raising for wounded soldiers, he said it had been considered undesirable that the money so collected should go towards the Government's hospital at Rotorua, or to form part of any provision made at the New Plymouth Hospital for wounded soldiers, but should be utilised partly in providing comforts for the wounded, and largely for their benefit in the future.

Mr. F. Jackson, president of the Fitzroy Club, also expressed his appreciation of the hearty welcome given to the visitors.
