PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE.
ASSISTANCE FOR THE SALVATION ARMY. A special meeting of the New Plymouth Patriotic Cbmmittee was held yesterday afternoon at the Town Hall. Present: Mr. J. E. Wilson .(chairman) and Messrs H. Coodacre, W. A. Collia, Brooker, C. H. Burgess, \V. J. Penn, Rev. F. Hales, and L. M. Monteath (secretary). The chairman stated that he had called the meeting together to introduce Adjutant Winton, of the Salvation Army, to them, as this visiting officer was Commissioner Hodder's representative and was at present seeking the aid of the various patriotic societies. Adjutant Winton stated that he was there that day to ask {lie. help of the New Plymouth Committee to enable the Salvation Army to carry on their good work amongst the men in training in I lie four camps now in existence. During the past lifteen*'months the Army liatl spent something like £ISOO in Trentliaui alone, and their Institute there was crowded every night.. It was now decided that something like C'2ooo should be expended on the other camps, where wholesome reading, writing material, games, etc., will be provided for free of charge. At Wanganui on Tuesday afternoon the Committee there had at a full meeting passed .C 250 as a grant to work amongst the men. Palmerston North had also promised to assist. Adjutant Winton, in conclusion, thanked the Committee for their kindness and asked that bis appeal should have favorable consideration.
A brief discussion then look place and the members present looked upon (lie appeal as very reasonable and u very deserving one, but thought that before they could definitely decide it would lie better to refer the application to the full committee,
On the motion of Mr. Wilson, and seconded by Mr. Collin, it was decided 111 recommend to the committee at the next meeting that the sum of .CI.TO lie donated to the Salvation Army to help in tin! work as carried on by' them in the various military camps.
