NEW PLYMOUTH SOCIAL NEWS. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. and Mrs. J. Grant have returned from their visit to Stratford. ' Miss Bary, who has been the guest of Mrs Hill, returned to Auckland yesterday by the a.s. Earawa. Mrs, Skinner senr., is the guest of her son, Mr W. H. Skinner, Napier. Mrs. Fitzherbert and the Misses Fitzherbert, wiio have been for some months visiting friends in the Wairarapa district, and also in Auckland, returned to New Plymouth last Tuesday. Miss Alma Shaw is the guest of Mrs Herbert CoKier, Wanganui. Miss K. Hamerton, who 3ias been on a "visit to Wanganui, has returned. Mrs Budge, Stratford, is the guest of I Mrs Blundell. Mrs. Hamerton, Inglewood, has been visiting her daughter, Mrs J. E. Wilson, but has now returned. Mr and Mrs Hugh Bailey have returned after their hurried visit to Wellington, where they went to bid fafewell to their son, Mr K. Bailey.

Miss Forsdick and Miss Sutherland, Wanganui, are on a visit to New Plymouth. Dr. and Mrs Makin, of Wellington, are at present staying at the Mountain House. Mr and Mrs Wilfred Perry, who have been on a visit to the Old Country, returned by the mail train yesterday. Miss Jessie MoAllum, of the nursing staff of the Christchurch Hospital, is on a visit to her home at Omata. Misses Reilly, Hawera, after spending the week-end with Mrs J. Glenn, have returned. Mr and Mrs J. Glenn and Miss Dora Bedford are spending the week-end at Hawera this week. ReV. Mr Kayll who has "been acting locum for the Rev. Mr A.'<H. Colvillo, returns to Auckland next Tuesday. ' BRIDGE EVENINGS. j Mrs Whetter was hostess to a bridge evening last Thursday, Mrs McQuade winning the first prize, Mrs A. B. K. Fookes second, and Mrs Grant, the mystery prize. Amongst those present were: Mcsdames Kockel, Hirst, Ryder, Heard, Chancy, Curtis, Grant, McQuade, A. B. Fookes, Misses Bradbury, Bedford, and Wliitton.

Mrs Chancy, senr., entertained a number of friends at bridge last Thursday afternoon. The prizes were won by Mrs Heard (first), and Mrs Stocker(tlie mystery prize). j Last Wednesday Mrs Brookman (Waitara) gave a delightful kitchen tea. In honor of -Miss .Jessie .Jenkins, who is shortly to he married <to Mr Leslie Birdling. The guessing' and tasting competitions were won by Miss .J. Jenkins and Mr M. .Johnston. Amongst those pre. sent were:—Misses .Johnston, Taylor. PARIy TENNIS OPENING,

The Park, Tennis and 'Croquet Club were favored with beautiful weather for the opening on Thursday, and consoquenlly tlu-ru wa s a large attendance. 'Most of the ladies present wore their summer dresses. The courts never looked or p!ayed better, and the club should have a very successful season. The croquet members are increasing, and the club Mill .soon be obliged to provide additional accommodation. A splendid tea was serve,! el fresco by the ladies. MARRIAGE OX A TROOPSHIP. A wedding ceremony in unique surroundings took place in Wellington on Saturday afternoon, when Sergeant Arthur Field was married to Miss JOlsie Webb.
