THE AUSTRALIAN INCREASE. WILL BE PASSED ON TO THE PUBLIC. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, April 1, The new Federal watersiders' award has caused a sensation in shipping circles. It is estimated that it will mean an increase of wages in Sydney alone of 1130,000 a year. Shipowners have not attempted to disguise the fact that the public will have to pay. EFFECT IN NEW ZEALAND. D.unedin, Friday. The representatives of shipping admit that the new rates of pay for waterside work at the Australian and Tasmanian ports will seriously affect all intercolonial shipping. It will also affect in a less degree oversea steamers engaged in the service with the Commonwealth. The effect of the new award must, it is believed, come home to the public in a direct way. It is impossible just now to estimate the actual increase that must be imposed on freights and fares.
