The contest was noteworthy on account of the adoption by the Yale crew of the English stroke. "Rowing experts afterwards attributed their defeat to the use of this stroke. Men, they say, are not fitted to use it unless they first underwent a long and gruelling course of training extending over at least four years. The Americans are not likely to generally adopt the stroke.
