CANADA AND NEW ZEALAND
REMARKABLE EXPANSION OF TRADE. INCREASED SHIPPING FACILITIES. Auckland, June 19. Tlie remarkable expansion of tiade between Cana-la and Neiv Zealand has oilk'd for a geod deal of attention, and recently there has been so iniuh n eight offering at Australasian ports of call and at. Vancouver that the cargo space available on the Malaira, Maraina, and' Niagara has been taxed to the utmost. When seen by .a reporter this morning, the Canadian Trade Commissioner, Mr W. A. Bcdiloe, said that after some difficulty ft suitable cargo steamer had been secured for the trade. A vessel of over four thousands tons has been chartered by the Union Company, and according to' present arrangements she was to leave Australia for Vancouver in August. After discharge there she would- load what freight was offering for New Zealand ports. In the event of there not being .sufficient to make up a complete cargo it was likely that she would go to San Francisco to fill up. Tn speaking of shipments which were likely to he brought Initio vessel, Mr Beddoe* pointed out that the fact that the seasons of New Zealand and the west coast of North America were opposite made them admirably suited for the interchange of commodities. When there were ' no apples or onions to he had in the Dominion, for instance, supplies could be brought from British Columbia, and vice versa. When cold weather was being experienced in Canada, similar shipments could be sent from Australasia. Another important feature was that produce shipped from Auckland would be landed in Vancouver in nineteeen days, which is just a third of the time occupied by steamers on the direct passage from 'Auckland to a Home port. Consignments of butter and frozen meat, already heavy show a decided increase every 'season.' "Trade prospects are really so "bright," said Mr Beddoe finally, 'that the construction of several more Niagaras for the Canadian and Australasian service seems to be justified."
