GAMING HOUSES RAIDED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Dndn, April 16. The police raided two gaming houses in the Solio district of London and seized a large sum of monev. Six of the accused were remanded and 68 were bound over to appear when called on. UNIVERSITY OF LONDON. London, April 16. The Royal Commission on the London University recommends the abolition of the holding in the colonies examinations for the degrees of London University. An additional £90,000 is required for professorships and laboratories. DAMAGE TO. VINEYARDS. Paris, April 10. Frosts caused immense damage to the vineyards in the Rhine Valley. THE VALUE OF VIVISECTION. London, April 16. Many leading surgeons have testified to the value of vivisection and combatted Dr. Hageby's denunciation of the serum treatment. They pointed out that Pasteur's discoveries had effected a great saving of life. THE TITANIC FUND. London, April 16. The Public Trustee reports that £413,000 was collected for the Titanic Relief Fund, and £383,000 invested, yielding £15,000 a year. Twenty-one thousand pounds was being spent annually. The Daily Mail protests against the policy of hoarding the capital. THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND. London, April IC. The Church Association has sent a petition to the King, signed by 36,000 persons, respecting the lawlessness in the Church of England. The petition urges the bishops to enforce discipline, and thereby relieve Protestants of their intolerable grievances. A PAPAL BULL. London, April IG. Bishop Arnold Mathew (the Earl of Landaff), head of the Old Catholics in England, sued the Times for libel in publishing the translation of the Papal Bull, excommunicating him, in* which the Words "wicked crime" were used in re--1 ference to Bishop Mathew's consecration of clergymen in 1911. A verdict was returned for the defendant paper, but the jury deprecated the publication in England of Bulls affecting the status of individuals. v EMIGRATION. London, April 16. : Mr. Watts, Premier of Victoria, and Mr. Holman, Attorney-General of New-' South Wales, have discussed a proposal for the consolidation of the London emigration departments, and have arrived . at an arrangement which, if adopted, will eliminate competition and secure more effective supervision, better shipping arrangements, greater economy, and pave the way for the assumption by the Federal Government of the control of ' immigration.
