OPPOSITION TO SATURDAY. DEMAND EOll AMENDMENT OF THE ACT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, East Night. A meeting of Wellington shopkeepers to-night carried a resolution expressing the strong opinion that the present clause in the .Shops and Oil'iees Amendment Act, l!)l)8. allowing 10 per cent, of the electors of any combined district to petition the local authority to take a poll to determine the weekly halfholiday for shops, is harassing and against the best interests of the shopkeeping community, and asking Parliament to delete such clause from the Act, or. failing such amendment, that a clause be inserted compelling such signatories to fill in their full names. nrcupa.tions. and addresses, so that the returning officer may more easily ascertain if such petitioners are en the roll, and that all sucli petitions shall be deposited a* the various municipal offices for signature.
