DISTRICT NEWS.

EGMOXT VILLAGE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Local Territorials and cadets are experiencing a hot time just now, judging by the Court proceedings at Inglewood on Thursday last. It comes rather hard on country boys who are forced to attend drill during the busy season. Nevertheless, it is quite fair Unit they should all be forced to toe the mark. The majority of farmers arc busy preparing land for turnip sowing. The weather (which is quite a change for Taranaki) is a splendid help to the working of the ground. Mr. Arthur Morton has, after a great deal of hard work, transformed the area in front of his residence into a bowling green. Tt must bo a pleasure to Mr. Morton, who is well known in bowling circles as a keen follower of the game, to step from the front of his house on to a green of his own. Ho is to be congratulated on his efforts.

Mrs. Harry Heal, who has been seriously ill during the past month, is, her friends will be pleased to hear, on the way to recovery. Her family and relatives have had an anxious time during her illness.

I hear that Mr. Joe Houlahan, who met with a serious accident some time ago, has again been seriously hurt. The injury this time was indicted by a plough. At present farmers are looking forward to cheque day ami Christmas—and then to a merry time! The Village is "dead" just now as far ns entertainments are concerned. This is due in no small measure to the absence of the Dewhirst family. It was generally about this time that Mrs. Dewhirst was busy preparing a firstclass programme in aid of the school prize fund. Their absence is now becoming noticeable. Last Monday morning Mr. Carter discovered that hi.-, hor.-.e had taken advantage of a gate being left open, and had strayed on to the road. lie spent several days scouring the country in search of it. but without result, Eventually, he, knowing what an alert gentleman, the inglewood poundkeoper is supposed to be. visited the pound, and there discovered his horse in safe keeping.

Mr. Burrows, the local butcher, has installed a digester at Ms boiling-down works. It is hnrdly needful to remind people of this improvement. I take this opportunity. Mr. Editor, of wishing you and your stall the compliments of the season. [Which we heartily reciprocate.- I'M."]

in i.vi no. It is with deep regret Unit I have to report the death of Mr. W. .1. Stephenson, one of the oldest residents of I'uniho. he having taken up a block of land on the corner of the I'uniho and Main South roads about 30 years ago. on which he resided till the lime of hi> death, on Wednesday, the 18th iust. The late Mr. Stephenson look a great interest in all public all'airs. ami at the time' of his death was chairman of the Werekino Road I'oard, and was also a member of the i'uniho School Committee, lie leaves a widow and a family of four sons and three daughters, who, I am sure, will have the sympathy of the whole of the I'uniho dislvici. A meeting of the School (omniitt.ee was held on Wednesday night, when the secretary was instructed to forward a letter of sympathy to Mrs. Stephenson and family* A letter of sympathy was also ordered to be sent to Mr. Cleineiice, late schoolmaster at Pimiho, who has just had the misfortune to lose !u>

youngest son Arthur by drowning in the Wangamii river whilst trying to rescue a schoolmate. We are having quite a drought here at present, and farmers who have got turnips in are crying out for rain, whilst others who have their hay cut are wanting more fine weathei. What a job it would be to pleacc everybody! Dancers please take notice that the Boxing Night basket social has been cancelled.
