J'roni uur Kcsident Reporter. "SHALL WE ALL RESIGN?" NO LOAN MONEY AVAILABLE. SERIOUS POSITION m STRATFORD COUNTY. _ At the Stratford County Council meet nig ;i letter was read from tlic Minister of Finance, in answer to a letter from the Council, stating that "as your Council has been granted more than £3OOO by the State-Guaranteed Advances Office, it would be advisable to endeavor to raise the required loans through some other channel outside the Advances Office, as no more can be granted from tiuU office at the present juncture." "Yes," added the ehairman, after reading the letter, "I'm afraid these other people will he all right. They'll bump up the rate of interest. . . . As far as I am personally concerned, I'll never give my vote to raise money outside the Department. But what are we going to do? We want three loans. One creamcry is almost 'blocked for want of a road. Another loan is wanted to make a road .for a new creamery. There will be from' 1250 to 1500 cows' there, and it h blocked for want of money. It is evident, that the Council can do no new work 'unless money can be got on the loan system. What is the Council going to do? ( Shall we resign, and let them run the County themselves, or what?' There is the Stanley road bridge by the i Auckland Road School. We have no ! money to rebuild that bridge, and we j can't make a ford there."

Cr. Smith said the position was only a sign of the times. It was going to be unduly hard in some cases. "But they have got to face the music just as they find it. They can't do impossiblities."' Cr. Anderson moved that the chairman and.Cr. Christoffel be a deputation to wait on the Minister with a view of having -the £SOOO limited removed, and that they endeavor to obtain the support of local members. Even if the Government was short of funds, said Cr. Anderson, it had no right to let a district like this ge back. Cr. Young seconded.

Then followed a discussion upon tin advisability of sending a deputation. Cr. Thomson considered it a waste of £2O. Cr. Cliristoffel, in supporting the motion, said that he would be willing to go to Wellington at his own expense. Cr. Walter said lie would favor the motion if ho thought it would do,any good, but he knew the country members were doing their utmost in' laying the position before the Ministers, just as well, he thought, as the deputation could do. Cr. Smith: The country members are doin» their .best, and so is the Government, and I doirt think we should force their hand*. The war at Home, and one thing and another are creating a tightness in the money market. Cr. Marfell: They haven't got the money to advance. The motion was put and carried. In recording his vote, on the division, Cr. Marfell said, "As Jack is willing to pay his. own expenses, I'll- vote for it." "No, no." said Cr; .Smith, "I wouldn't support it on those terms." The services at Holy > Trinity Church next Sunday will be coii•j ducted by Mr. E. F. Hemingway. I The principal point about' a dog collar J seems to be that it should be lone ! enough and strong enough to tie up » calf, or to use as a breeehing-strap. Complaint was made at yesterday's meeting of the Stratford County Council that the collars recently supplied were too > short, and so poor in quality that any ordinary dog on the chain could snap { the collar.

A troupe of minstrels, ladies and gentlemen, from the choir and congregation of Holy Trinity Church, are putting in regular practices for a two nights' entertainment in the Town Hall next month.

The replies received from the various J local bodies in Taranaki to the circular issued by the Stratford County Council } asking support of a local bodies' cooperative concrete pipe-making works have not been such as to encourage the Council to go on with the seteme, only the Whangamomona County Council expressing itself in favor of it. Some temporised, others turned down the proposal "It, means we will have to go on our own," said one of the Councillors yesterday. -'lf it has only had the effect of bringing in the private company we hear about it will have done some good," said Cr. Walters. ■'But do you "think they will start?" asked the'chairman. "Well," said the engineer, "if they don't get aw more encouragement than this, I don't think- lb v will." Dust and sand blew thick in Broadway yesterday. The water-cart was kept at home till very late, probably because oi late its appearance in the street has had the effect of precipitating rain. "I hope you'll 1;?ke a bit of notice of this next one," said the county chairman yesterday when reading the correspon deuce. The inference is obvious. A cock quail was caught in front of the County Hotel yesterday morning. It must not be inferred from this that the streets of Stratford are only bush leaves. A quail heir : s quite a rara avis, we would have you understand. A splendid educational film outlines the making of an aeroplane, and in lighter vein aro a quartette of splendid comics.
