VIOLENT ERUPTION.
NIUAFOA ACTIVE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The Union Steam Ship Company has received a cablegram from Suva to-day transmitting a wireless message from Tofua that the Island of Niuafoa was in eruption. Xiuafoa is a small island in the Tongan Group, and has a native population of about 200, while there are probably about six whites on the island. Steamers only call there to exchange mails, which are conveyed to and .from the vessels by native swimmers. A volcanic eruption took place in the island about 1887, when the centre caved in, and what was formerly high land sub sided and formed a large lake.
